Abstract

Substance use in children and adolescents is associated with significant global morbidity. The lifetime prevalence of alcohol and illicit drug use disorders among youth from the United States (U.S) was 8% and 2-3 % respectively. A meta-analysis of studies from 22 countries reported pooled prevalence of substance use among the street children to be about 60%. The literature regarding adolescent substance use is largely from the Western world.
